In the PLM environment there is a need to visualise models without using the original authoring tool used to create the model. Solutions currently available do enable visualizing large and complex 3D models that constitute the digital mockup (as opposed to the physical mockups used hitherto). Such tools provide for graphical interaction (zoom, pan, rotate) and for making annotations.
But, the files are still very large in size and it increases when the fidelity of the model needs to be very high. Size will also be a bottleneck when the models have to be frequently updated as they are manipulated in any application.
Second, these tools do not allow navigation through parts in an assembly. A mock-up of the individual sub-assembly or components has to be separately loaded for visualizing the sub-assembly or part.
Third, the need for domain based interaction (for assembly planning as an example) with the underlying shape models (as opposed to the visual on the screen) is not being addressed by the current solutions.
The VISViewer enables the evolution from merely visualising large (bulky) 3D models to interacting with these 3D models in real time. As complete shape is represented, it is possible to retain the assembly tree structure even in the visualization model.

The users can navigate through a complex assembly with the visualization window getting automatically updated. It is also possible to suppress components or sub-assemblies from the tree and have this reflected in the visualization window as well. The viewer is integrated into the PLM environment.
“ We’ve been using the VISViewer from 3DSoC for over six months now and I’d like to mention here that VIS has definitely addressed all our key challenges we faced in visualizing complex 3D models. Some of the models, which did not even load using the earlier solutions, can now be viewed using VIS. The low file sizes coupled with the ability to interact with the models are great features to have. We look forward to continued support from 3DSoC on our projects. ”
