VIS is a new technology for multimedia 3D geometry representation in a concise footprint. This patented technology has been developed by scientists at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Stanford University, Palo Alto.

Benchmark studies show reduction in file sizes between 10 to 40 times over comparable representations used for 3D visualisation and about 100 times over CAD representation. A model of average complexity is described in 10 Kb (as compared to a 1 Mb CAD representation), and can be downloaded in less than 10 seconds on narrow bandwidth connections such as dial-up or wireless.

It is possible to author content that includes manipulation and interaction with 3D geometry. This is useful in a wide range of applications. The concise nature of the representation of the entire content makes it very attractive for distribution over a network.

VIS models are highly interactive and contain animation, hyperlinks, and voice and text annotations to facilitate education and training. VIS models are internet-ready in that these models can be viewed in a standard browser.
